I’m Brittany.
Before becoming a full-time content creator and curriculum writer, I lived and taught for five years on a reservation in northern Arizona. That entire season of my life was an education in so many ways.
When I first arrived on the reservation, so much was new to me. Anyone who’s been a teacher knows the first year of teaching is just survival! Teaching in itself is hard even when you know what you’re doing. But on top of learning systems, classroom management, student behavior management, and etc., I realized I had a major problem: I did NOT feel confident about what I was teaching in 5th grade math.
I’m a little embarrassed to say that it had literally been decades since I’d done long division by hand! So as you can imagine, it was a struggle to teach what I really didn’t know. The more I talked with fellow educators, the more I saw just how common it was for teachers to not only struggle with doing the math themselves – but also, that they struggled to teach it.
Everything changed when I started teaching math with money.
It became easier for me to understand and explain. My students were more excited to learn about it. And all of a sudden? What they were learning during our math block was immediately relevant to them. Not this “someday, maybe, abstract thing I’ll use when I’m an adult.” They were using it right away… and during recess… and after school, and so on.
This realization was a total lightbulb moment for me.
Since then, I’ve been using money as a manipulative to teach concepts like place value, decimals, and even the basic operations of addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication. That’s evolved to help both students and teachers develop financial literacy as well.
